I just got to chapter 3 but I also fucked around a ton in chapter 2, probably spent an hour looking for twin dolls before the game actually told me what they were. >but anon, they tell you that like 30 seconds after starting the chapter if you go the right way Yes, IF you go the right way. Anyways, I'm having fun. Zoom and focal points seem pretty fucking good, I can already one-shot some basic ghosts with stealth shots this way. I do think stealth shots kind of ruin the appeal of ghost encounters in this series though, it's the "SURPRISE MOTHERFUCKER" factor that makes them cool.

This is my first FF game and I plan to go back and play the others after having completed this one. I can see why it’s such an acquired taste and at the same time I’m confused, I respect it not being incredibly casualized. Although with all of the modern style tutorial popups I don’t know if they intentionally have left all of the mechanics obtuse or if they tried and failed to make it easier to understand. I didnt play pre enrage nerf so I don’t know how broken the game was initially, but simply having always made sure all the target reticles were lit up when I attacked I was able to get through the early encounters in a couple of minutes at max on normal mode. I think anyone else still having trouble probably hasn’t put any upgrades into focal points or is using the default film type. Probably not using the Dodge mechanic either which until you encounter the chicks with swords that loop forward strikes you can just spam backward and avoid almost everything. I’ve now gotten to the point where I can understand that you would use different filters in tandem to activate different special shots at different times although I haven’t really implemented it into my gameplay yet. I also don’t really understand the different film types aside from Type 14 being a direct damage upgrade to the starting one. What use case is there for the film that is both low in power and slow to load? A game that is only talked about for having fanservice and being spooky is surprisingly deep mechanically and unclear in its instruction.

Radiant really breaks the game. Max focal upgrade + max radiant charm lets you 1 shot normal ghosts with no effort with a type 14 film. Playing on normal right now btw but I bet its just as easy on battle now after the nerf.

The fatal frame series was only ever difficult twice: 1 - The entirety of FF1. This is some survival horror shit that really lives up to its name. 2 - The last sections of FF3, when you're dealing with miasma (or was it called malice?) and you have to travel around the whole fucking map picking up puzzle pieces.

Just opened Mayu's cell in chapter 5. I love when this game feels like Fatal Frame and I like the expanded exploration and side content, but I don't think I care for any concession that makes this game feel "modern". A good example are the yellow paint tier hiding spots that you start beelining to once the Kusabi starts showing up. Every time I see one it's like "oh no, the one-shot big bad's gonna spawn either now or on the way back, and I'm fucking right half the time. Shit like that is really grating on my nerves, but when it's just Fatal Frame it's as fun as ever.
