There was this SMW rom hack I remember seeing a while ago. It was heavily inspired by Brutal Mario. Bowser was the final boss in it as in the original Bowser from SMB1 in the game's lore and it actually paid a little homage to his origin as a wizard during the fight by having him cast magic.
