Getting the Varia is a nearly universal milestone across the series, and barring some minor alterations (and the really really really unfortunate Fusion design) it keeps that consistent look

The original metroid power suit was a lot more greebly and 80's like and didn't translate as well in art or the technology of the screen representing the armor. In metroid 2 the Varia suit upgrade had to be given the iconic bulkier look with the legs and shoulders in order to distinguish the difference on the screen used and was basically so good they reused it in super and later Fusion/prime series although in prime 2 it gets a more sleek futuristic makeover.
