This is a controversial take but I firmly believe the addition of SPRINTING fucked up the original soulful feeling of the game more than anything, but the top three are
>Introduction of sprinting
>Removal of pitch-black night time
>Tech advances leading to increased render distances and significantly less spooky fog
Before sprinting, all mobs were genuinely dangerous because you couldn't get away from them once they were aggro; skeletons would keep sniping you, zombies would keep advancing towards you, and spiders would actually out-run you, while creepers would sneak up on you. If you hear a creeper hissing behind you, it's already too late to sprint forwards out of the blast zone, you're guaranteed to take damage from the explosion
All of this made combat surprisingly difficult, forcing you to hide inside your base at night, meaning you were huddled in a corner hearing creepy noises outside, so your imagination filled in the blanks and the game became much more spookier as a result, especially combined with the thick fog and pitch-black night time that early versions had. All this creepiness led to stuff like herobrine emerging
Since sprinting, you can survive encounters with any and all combination of mobs by simply running away and kiting them. Yes, you'll have to eat plenty to keep this up, but there's literally no shortage of food, it's absolutely everywhere and it's trivial to get a source of food that will last you the entire game. So monsters are no longer dangerous, you can clearly see unaided at night time because everyone figured out you can crank your gamma up to max to get night vision, and general hardware improvements mean the eerie fog from early versions isn't as prevalent.Load up minecraft right now, turn your gamma all the way down, forbid yourself from sprinting, and turn down your render distance and activate fog and it immediately becomes 2009 lvdosovl again
