I am currently replaying through the original Psychonauts, and man it is just fucking unconditionally even dowsing shit has its purpose, though the game should have FORCED you to grind earlier during the day great. Not sure how many technical improvements PC version got post-release, but what sort of fucking anemic husk of a man do you have to be to just dismiss it entirely. It has tons of flavor and distinct designs and an eclectic mix of different mechanics, all-tied with a non-committal overworld exploration that ensures you'll find SOMETHING to like about the game. All the variant dialogue that changes each step of the quest, like a classic RPG, countless details and assets that create a sense of a greater world and established personalities, pulpy plot that gets going quickly and never gets too cliche.
Double Fine's fumbles are well known, and I will not lament their demise, but I refuse to acknowledge any "always been trash" claims. Psychonauts was certainly a lightning in a bottle, like many great games, and subpar performance is a terrible first impression. But you don't make stuff like bespoke quest item dialogue or levitation physics or even just Razputin's go-getter attitude without some understanding of what makes games fun to engage with. I can gush even longer if we get to comparisons to the sequel, what a shitshow that was.
