At this point I'm pretty sure they're doing the thing where a gay romance is portrayed as taboo for a fictional reason (mermaids can't love humans) while the same sex part is entirely unacknowledged, in order to highlight how both taboos are nonsensical. Star Trek did something like this years ago to good effect (https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Reassociation). This would tie wonderfully into the original story, simultaneously refuting the tragic in-story impossibility of a human/mermaid romance, and the metaphorical impossibility of Andersen's gay romance in his era.

I know we're worrying about if it's going to be friendship/love for all humanity as true love vs romantic love for Mari, but I think today's episode makes it much less likely, in addition to btfoing het. Now, I do think Lara's experiences and feelings for everyone she's met will be important, but Lara's feelings this ep feel too strong and also too... narrowed on one thing for her heart to be soothed with just "I love humanity!" if that makes sense. Especially since we don't have much time (3 eps now) to bridge the gap from Lara's current immaturity into something more broad. Anyway, just my opinion. Really liked the episode today.

Someone on the Sayonara Lara discord posted a pretty lengthy analysis of the show so far, and predicted an ending that I haven't seen suggested yet. Basically, Lara still feels that her mermaid form is ugly and unlovable, and that the climax will be Mari confessing and kissing her while in that form. The show will end Lara remaining together with Mari as a mermaid; she and the people around her will accept and love every part of her.I can't quite imagine the logistics of this, and it would require the general populace to learn about mermaids, which seems ambitious with only three episode left. On the other hand it would explain the helicopter sounds that play over episode one's opening scene.I'm more and more convinced that the comphet angle is a conscious choice by the writers.
