I just never understood the ending. You are writing people's names completely anonymous. If you are even a little bit careful, how do you get caught? I know I wouldn't have and I admit I'm not particularly smart or anything.

He killed the guy on live TV broadcasted only in Kanto region, narrowing the search to like 20 million people.Furthermore, initially he only killed people while out of school (shorter days than a regular worker - longer than someone in primary school), giving away that he's a high school student, which narrowed it down to like a million people at most.Once L theorised to other cops that Kira must be a high school student based on the timing of the killings he immediately switched to random times, indicating he's a high school student with access to a police computer with info on Kira case, narrowing it to two dozen families and maybe 50 people total.Finally, the first FBI agent killed was assigned to two families including Iamgays, of which one contained an arrogant overachieving high school student who made a point to be as robotically "normal" as he could and would try and force himself into Kira investigation like the stereotypical serial killer. At that point L was certain it was Light, but had no way of proving it.Basically he did everything he could have done to implicate himself and intentionally hung around the investigators to prove how smart he is. If he told L - fuck off you weirdo, when they first met, there's literally nothing he could have done and could gain no further insights even if they caught Misa with the death note, Light would still be OK
