But as the decade rolled on, we slowly became aware of the horrifying fact that nothing had really changed. The dissolution of the Soviet Union didn’t make for fewer threats, it created more. And that optimism began decaying into a pervasive nihilism that we all embraced to some degree, basically deciding that regardless of how it happened, whatever direction it came from, we were all fucked, so we might as well enjoy the time we had left. Then the new century arrived with its own set of horrors, chief among them being the horrifying possibility that this would just go on and on.Cheers!
