Heading there 11-21 January with my wife, our 2yr old, and our 4yr old. Any recommendations on things to do or things to avoid, where to stay, and how long to stay there? We'll be renting a SUV and bringing car seats. I speak enough Spanish to get around. We'll probably stay in a hotel in San Salvador for 2 nights and Air BnBs the rest of the time, then a hotel near the airport the night before our flight. My 4yr old likes animals (any kind) and my 2yr old likes dinosaurs and heavy machinery. Should we bother with a stroller at all? Or just backpack child carriers? It'd be nice to have somewhere for them to sleep during mealtimes and such but they can sort of do that in the rigid frame hiking carriers we have.

Theres a botanical garden in the capital thats nice you can see some weird animals there. And the national library is nice. Otherwise its still a boring shithole of a city

El Salvador is pretty boring. Go to a volcanic hot spring with good infrastructure I guess and check out a local market for tropical fruits. That's what I would do. Getting around is also a pain because the roads are shit
