Went to Tokyo for 8 days 2 years ago and loved it
Going to Japan next year, this time for 2 weeks and planning on booking hotels for 2-3 locations throughout the trip, preferably at least one urban location and one more rural out there location

I really dug Beppu out in Kyushu. Bus ride from Fukuoka or Nagasaki. It is a hot spring town, but has a bit of an old resort town that time forgot kind of feel with hot spring steam everywhere. Early moring walks are a serious vibe. Some rugged bathhouses there and some fancier ones along with the Hell pools.

Hit okinawa for a week. They are a little racist if you look american but its an amazing place. Great beaches, food is amazing, not too expensive. Im unsure if they still have a banana show. They have the worlds largest tug of war every year in Naha or Nago, cant remember. But shits so big it doesnt really move. Great festivals for cherry blossom season.

Spend at least two days in Nikko. The place itself is a asian redwoods-style forest with multiple temples, some UNESCO world heritages. The nips themselves have the quote: "you can't say marvelous untill you've been to Nikko"
