Hey anons, i'm an euro looking to go to Cali sometime next year and just spending time there. Probably mostly in LA area but also traveling around. (Yes, i know your state is the size of my country) I'm looking for tips on how to save on money while on the trip so i can stay for longer. I don't have experience with longer term travel so any input would be appreciated!

Rent a van and put an airbed in the back. Shit in produce bags, tie them shut and throw them in the street for the jannies to pick up. Strip down and pour a jug of water over your head to shower. Doesn't matter who is watching. Don't leave a spot until somebody tells you to move along. Blow clouds of weed smoke in the faces of passersby while playing niggerbeats on your portable speaker. There are two paths you can go if you want to save money. The first is workstay. If you go this route you have the upside of spending nothing for the entire duration of your trip. I did a workstay in the Redwoods forest near SF / Silicon Valley. I worked about 10 hours a week painting benches and in return I got free room and board. The fags on aircucknb were paying $220 a night for the same thing, except they didn't get food and they couldn't use the showers.Your other option is to rent a room off of craigslist. You want your own room with shared common areas. The floor for this in the most expensive American cities is roughly $800 a month. They will let you sign a monthly lease. From here you can do daytrips in and around LA. If you're staying around 90 days you save thousands of dollars doing it this way vs using aircucknb or using nightly rentals. You get to experience local life and you get to have nontransactional relations with people.For expensive countries like the US I recommend workstay, pay $40 to access the platform and read the reviews to make sure its not a slave driver. For poorer countries I recommend the second approach, short term rentals using local listings.

How much money do you have? Cheap lodging is usually not safe in LA. And what method of travel are you using? I enjoyed driving through the desert but I grew up in Florida so it was only because of the massive change in scenery.

I have to ask... why go to LA? Sure there plenty of famous places there, but it's not a place to go to save money. It all depends on why exactly you're going there.

last time I was in California (as kraut) I flew in to San Francisco, stayed a few days went climbing in Yosemite for like a week, then did a few National Parks up the West Coast (Redwood, carter lake, lassen volcanic, Olympic, north cascades) total of like 40 daysbecause honestly traveling the US is mainly worth it for the nature for anything else you get better value elsewhere>looking for tips on how to save on money what's your budget? and what's your baseline?we stayed in a lot of really nice, small actual Bed and Breakfast hotels they are not exactly "budget", usually $2-300/night similar to airbnbs or regular hotels, but the owners often are around and give good tips, plus really good breakfasts and they feel very americancheapest is to just camp US allows "dispersed camping" on all? most? publicly owned land you need a car anyway and you can rent one with a rooftop tent for a minimal (like ~$5/day more in my case) higher amount

Its pretty fun, but idk how to save money there. Things are pretty expensive. I went to SoCal for school. I would recommend Joshua Tree for sure if you like hiking. Also, the museums of Riverside. And Redlands + Downtown Redlands are really cute. They have a nice night market. Love that whole area, its super artsy.
