for the average american tourist, appalachia offers a dramatically richer, deeper, and more rewarding experience, culturally, aesthetically, and spiritual, than anything in the rocky mountains or western united states.

This is absolutely untrue, and you know it. The Rockies are superior for visitors in every conceivable way. Only the White Mountains of New Hampshire even come close to the grandeur of the West. However, eastern mountain people are quirkier and more interesting to talk to then the generically prosperous and coolly polite white people of the Rocky mountains. The California Sierra foothills and PNW coast range towns have their share of oddball characters if that's what you want. Summer weather in Appalachia versus the Rockies? It's not even a competition. The West gigamogs with its warm sunshine and brisk dry air. Appalachia has much less habitat variety than the West. 90% is a uniform blanket of deciduous green. Here you can cross a dozen distinct habitats in a two mile walk.

I've traveled extensively all over the US. I wouldn't rank any area of Appalachia in my top 50 for places to visit. For hiking and outdoors, the western US is infinitely better.
