I'll be traveling to Romania in August, and since Ruse is only two hours away from Bucharest by bus, I've decided to spend 3-4 days in northern Bulgaria before I start exploring Romania. What other cities or landmarks in the north are worth seeing while I am there?

Plovdiv has Roman ruins. Was a Thracian settlement originally, then Greek, then Roman. Lots of history there.

You probably know this already, but you should really go to Rila

Make a stop in Shumen to visit the 1300 Years Monument.

Sofia was mid for me, 2 days or 3 at most, are fine. I was there for 4 days and on last day, I felt there wasnt anything interesting to see anymore. Visited Plovdiv for one day, ruins are alright, but nothing special. Overall, kinda underwhelming trip

Just stay in Romania and avoid Bulgaria

The north, west of Ruse is a desolate wasteland
Visit the castle left over from the Romanian occupation in Balchik, Tutrakan is also a notable place for a visit if you are into history
Geographically it is boring

Varna is pretty good.

Thoughts on this Bulgaria itinerary, with the number in parentheses being the number of nights at each stop?
I'd be using Sofia as a base to explore Pirin, Rila, and some other place, using guided tours because I'm lazy.
Burgas would be a place to chill and see Nessebar and Sozopal, and Varna is just a stop on the way to see the Danube Delta in Romania.
