DC lifetime resident here. It's a pretty boring place unless you REALLY like derivative white marble buildings, bland government offices, or military facilities.The best way to see it is by bike. Rent an electric bike (ideally a proper one from a store, or the cap bikeshare) and bike around downtown - I recommend h st, pennsylvania, 11th and 7th sts downtownish, there's a protected lane on 15th that takes you into virginia and from there you can bike along the potomac or you can bike to navy yard and catch the anacostia riverwalk trail on the other side of the frederick douglass /south capitol street bridge) and ride to bladensburg waterfront park - you can keep going to college park metro or north to west hyattsville o even wheaton metro if adventurous but the main things to see in dc are threefold: anacostia between the rollerrink and bladensburgh waterfront anacostia between waterfront, navy yard and 11st bridge to the east (you can't hug the water the whole time because of military facilities you sort of zig and zig out)and the potomac river trail (i dunno the official name) towards mt vernon - never taken it that far but you can ride from dc to alexandria and a lot is along the water through the trail is much more crowded and rougher than the anacostia riverwalk (on the far side of the river away from the city, yes its in the ghetto, yes its worth it)dc is sort of a cheap copy of rome/paris with derivative architecture there's a lot of cool stuff to see a few hours away in the mountains and I would recommend doing that if you have time (spruce knob, harpers ferry, blackwater falls)

DC is a pretty small city and you do not need a week there. Venture out into Old Town Alexandria or further into Virginia. DC will be hot and humid so dress appropriately. Bike or take the metro. The museums are one of the best parts of the city so take advantage. Just be on the lookout for blacks.

you could fill your entire week just visiting museums. there's a lot to see there. washignton dc has its bad areas but in general it's a beautiful city. as a brit, it may be less interesting to you, but for americans there are all kinds of monuments, government buildings, the national cemetery and so on. spring would have been a better time to visit but july 4 probably makes up for it being summer.

you could not have picked a worse time for crowds but all the good museums are free and it would take about a week to see everything at the mall.

and make sure to walk around the navy yard and the wharf, but you can also sortaaa bicycle through most of them and I recommend doing that too and there's a weird but cool bicycle bridge near the waterfront I think the entrance is near maine ave and 9th st its a bit hard to find uphill from maine ave in a park but there's a bridge running parallel to 395 taking you across to hains point, which has a nice view out onto the water and across into virginia there's also a nice bridge next to 495 for bikes or people with a good view of the water and va skyline near the mgm casino/alexandria

Went 2 weeks ago. Ford theatre was really cool. Learned more about Lincoln and JWB than I ever knew before. Night tour of the monuments and memorials was great too

DC Walmarts aren't even real Walmarts. They're convenience store sized and they don't have a huge open parking lot.

You have to go to the aircraft museum and see the Enola Gay and the SR71 Blackbird. It's like a half hour to 45 minute drive outside of DC and the traffic around DC can be horrible but it's worth it. I lived with someone around Alexandria in 2017 after Hurricane Irma flooded my apartment in Florida, so i got to see a lot of the area. The NoVA bars are fun and cool. There is a place i went to called Billy's Crab House you can literally park off of the Potomac River if you are on a boat, its technically in Maryland. If you get a chance to get on a boat you have to go down the Potomac during summer. It's very fun.

OP here. Yesterday was my first evening in DC.The metro from the airport showed off the huge highway and offices of lots of major companies. I was thinking that America was mogging. Definitely, based on that view, it's going to keep ruling the world (though I know the DMV area is stealing from the rest of the country).I went to my hotel, a glass building. Everyone who interacted with me acted like I'm am ugly subhuman. Ok, mostly expected, nothing deal breaking.It's extremely humid and hot. There were many youths and unkempt people loitering in the streets. The streets are surprisingly new and neat looking.I went to a fast food restaurant next to the shiny buildings and the inside of it looked literally like a GTA: San Andreas fast food restaurant. I mean literally. Even down to the table layout (there were surprisingly few of them). The food was similar to the UK's equivalent, but with slightly better meat.I then went to the centre of DC at around 6 or 7 pm, by metro. I left the metro station and it was extremely hot. And the streets were empty. I walked near some famous buildings and there were more policemen than people. It was like walking inside a GTA 7 tech demo that hadn't spawned the NPCs, except the ones driving the cars (which turn corners to run you over when you're crossing). It was surreal.The streets and pavements are really wide and empty. There are zero attractive women (not that I'd talk to anyone, but still). The streets and pedestrian areas are really badly fucking lit.The centre of DC is currently filled with porta potties and country music being played on loudspeakers. And pro-stonks and raging boomer edits are being holographed on the Washington monument, but that last one is ok.I went to a supermarket and stared at the junk food and didn't buy any of it. It feels like the mental equivalent of deadlifting 250 kg.I was in Le Marais in Paris yesterday.

OP here. I am nearing the end of my trip. It has been good, though I doubt I'll come back for a very long time. I went to many of the museums and predictable places.The city became more pleasant after the blazing sun was covered by clouds after the first few days. DC is probably good to live in but it feels quite bizarre in how generic the downtown and other parts feel.I went to Old Town Alexandria and it was nice, though even the grid-like street means I wasn't majorly impressed. I checked Wikipedia and it votes overwhelmingly Democrat, like the /pol/ memes.I went to McDonald's every day, except for two days where I had Chick Fil A and Raising Cane's for the first time, but they were meh. I managed to resist the junk food in the store every day except for two, where I didn't majorly overeat. I had flavours of Ben and Jerry's, Skittles, and M&Ms that are not found in the UK.The Air and Space Museum was a highlight, along with the transport section of the American history museum.My final walk ended up with me sitting in Dupont Circle in a pleasantly warm and bright evening, where it was very lively, almost like the simulation was taunting me with what I'd be leaving behind.I know DC is unrepresentative but the USA clearly mogs the UK and I'm depressed that I'm going back to a socialist dump.
