If you're looking for something fun, unironically go to Malaysia. It might seem drab there since it's "a Muslim-majority country", and it probably is quite drab now since it's currently Ramadan, but the rest of the year people actually party, eat good food, etc. It's not as perfectly rich or safe as Singapore, but not outrageously poor or dangerous. Many Singaporeans line up on the bridge to get to Johor Bahru just to eat Malaysian food.Something else that ought to be said about Malaysia is that it's a multi-ethnic country. Malaysian = the whole country, Malay = just the Malay ethnic group. There are also a ton of Chinese, a minority of Indians, a handful of indigenous mountain people, and a few expats. The Western side of the Malay peninsula (where Kuala Lumpur and most of the cities and attractions are) is quite chill regarding religion, but the Eastern side is more ethnically Malay and Sharia-ish (though in an orderly and stately rather than radical or hazardous way). The Borneo part, remarkably, is heavily Chinese.
