I got an opportunity to study abroad in Japan from mid-September to early February (~4 months). This isn’t a vacation or 2-week anime pilgrimage, I’d be enrolled full-time and working toward my degree.

I've been in Fukuoka for the last 4 months on a student visa. It was really rocky at the start but I'm starting to enjoy it. I was kind of planning on leaving before April which would grant me a tuition refund from my language school (around $2.5k) but really trying to decide if going back to the States is something I wanna do right away or not. I have plenty of savings but being away from a job for almost a year seems really irresponsible and would be hard to explain why I have such a large gap. I've spent around 3 days so far in Tokyo and I like it.
My home base is around Shibuya and there are tons of people around. While some might consider huge crowds a bad things, I kind of find them interesting, since I am coming from a town back in my home country with around 50k people and never more than 100 people in one place.
That being said, if I were to live in Tokyo, I'd chose outer parts of the city. I walked through some residential neighborhoods near Gōtokuji Temple and I loved it a lot. Very peaceful.

Heading back from Fushimi Inari, went there at around 9:00 PM.
Was very nice walk and I enjoyed it a lot. Very scenic at night. There was no one at the top besides some schoolgirls.Heard some rustling in the forest (boars/monkeys) but unfortunately did not see any yokai or succubus.

How hard is it to learn japanese? Enough for basic conversational and transactional purposes. I been to japan a couple times and i know you can more or less get by with a couple sumimasens, arigatos, onagaishimash, kudasai, pettanko, kore, to, hitori, daijobu, doko, numbers for getting cigarettes at combini etc... but im thinking next time i wanna do that whole hokkaido road trip thing, which will definitely have me out in the sticks with less places having english on the signs and menus etc... its probably doable with a dozen words or phrases, but im really considering maybe making an active effort to learn a bit more.Not full fluency or anything, but at least not having the coffeeshop staff default to english 5 seconds into the conversation because i dont know how to respond when they asking size, hot vs cold, do i have a points card or whatever. That shits consistently embarassing, no problem in checking in, out, having bags held at hotel, bars or restaurants or combini; not a word of english spoken, feel like a savvy traveler. Every fucking time i went in a coffeeshop, seconds later they're handing me the english menu and asking me what size/temp etc... in english and i feel like a dumb gaijinIs it worth learning more? Is it easy to do so online for free? Or is this more of one of those any additional is going to be extremely difficult and nominal improvements over the handful of transactional phrases i already know unless i try go for full fluency which is either going to be extremely time consuming and/or require external paid assistance to get anywhere?

Then I'm not sure where to go, already did
Kyushu, down to Yakushima, and did suite a bit in the Seto sea area (including Onomichi, Tomonoura, and I'm forgetting some, plus the Hiroshima area). Is Okinawa worth an additional flight, and thus a week?

Bros I need some help with ideas for planning. Our group is staying a week in Tokyo and then on to Osaka where we'll stay for 4 nights, split between the city and Kyoto. After that we're going to hit an Onsen town for 2 nights, where some members of our groups will be leaving us early.After that we got about 6 more nights to fill out. We were thinking of heading back to Osaka, since 4 nights will not be enough to see everything we want from Osaka, Kyoto and surrounding area. Or should we head elsewhere in the region, that can serve as a good base for daytrips? We're not married to going to Osaka, but we're a larger group and figured its a good town to head out from, or just if people want to chill and club all night instead.

Seconding Irish pubs, way, way better than HUB.My bread and butter was parks. Every city has a park where people will gather at night to pregame or take a break between bar hopping. In Osaka it's Sankaku Park in Amerikamura. These are BY FAR the best places to approach because the girls are often not expecting it, at least not from a foreigner, and it's a big open space full of other people so they don't feel pressured. There are also huge varieties of people to choose from, and even if you were out by yourself you can just make it look like you were passing through the area on your way to somewhere else so you don't look like you're out looking for ass.Runner-up is subculture bars - metal, punk, skating, whatever you're into. I was introduced to my current gf by the owner of a rock and roll bar, I wasn't even a regular or anything, I'd only been there like 4 or 5 times, but he asked me what kind of girls I was into and when I told him he was like "hang on, I know just the one for you" and set us up.Third place, tachinomiyas. They're hostile to big groups by design, so if you can find a tachinomi with a decent crowd going there will definitely be some single girls. I've probably been APPROACHED BY women more often at tachinomis than anywhere else (read: that doesn't mean they were all 10/10 stunners or had sexual intent).Honorable mention to military bars. Probably the best places to hook up with other foreigners - tons of Filipino, Brazilian, Ukrainian, black, etc. girls at these places. Of course there are Japanese people as well but the true gaijin hunters often skew older (35+). On certain nights they're packed with Amerifat servicemen. They're not rude or mean or anything, at least I've never had a bad interaction, but the will monopolize the DJ booth and dance floor. If you say thank you for your service they'll buy you a shot.
