>Is it worth it flying first class?
That’s a question only you can answer. I wouldn’t personally consider it for a flight under about fifteen hours; maybe one of your South American options includes a leg that long, but I don’t think a flight to Japan from anywhere in Europe is likely to be much over the twelve-hour mark. For me, business class is more than comfortable enough for that. I also wouldn’t bother booking an itinerary with multiple connecting legs as a single first-class ticket, because while the carriers may be happy to offer you a first-class markup, they’re (obviously) not flying three-cabin planes between, for example, Tokyo and Sapporo. You might not even get a real business class seat—I once had a “business class” connection inside Europe that was just the front of a little Airbus with the middle seat blocked off.And I wouldn’t book a longer or less convenient itinerary just to have a first-class option, unless you’re specifically looking forward to the first class experience. In the interest of full disclosure, I’ll admit that I wouldn’t ever book a first-class flight on my own dime. I’ve flown first a few times, but only with miles/upgrades. I don’t even like using my own money to buy business class tickets, although I occasionally do. But I’m cheap, and have a high tolerance for discomfort.
