>Is the subway in New York City safe?
Safe from what? Violent crime? Pickpockets? Catastrophic system failures/injurious accidents? Bad smells? Unpleasant but ultimately harmless interactions with crazy or otherwise unfortunate strangers? The answer to all but maybe the last two is “more often than not, sure.” I rode it more than once a day for a couple of years when I was living in New York, including late at night in less-desirable parts of the city, and many times in the years since (I live on the West Coast now but visit New York at least two or three times every year), and I have escaped unscathed. I stepped over a lot of puddles of piss, was yelled at by deranged bums pretty frequently, and endured more than a few service breakdowns that were sometimes seriously inconvenient, but I was never personally robbed or otherwise crimed on or injured. I’m not sure I know anyone who has been, and I know a lot of natives and lifer transplants. With basic common sense and awareness of their surroundings, almost everyone who gets on the subway gets off again without incident, every time they use it.There are wildly conflicting reports on subway crime levels—official figures suggest they’ve been trending downward for years (although most authorities concede that there was at least a moderate uptick in crime of most kinds during and after the pandemic), some insist that they’re skyrocketing, particularly assaults. The truth is surely somewhere in between. But it doesn’t change the fact that an overwhelming majority of people never get victimized.
