Wanted to see what y’all think of the shading on the bottom image. I wanted to get it as close as the top image.For context, light is a window on the left at dusk. Lineart is being used as ambient occlusion. Painted soft shadows using hue shift, then applied a hard purple shadow on top. Dusk gradient applied on top of everything.

I haven’t posted in like a month, since work has been very demanding. Last time I posted here, I was still working exclusively with pencil and paper, but people were insistent on me trying the digital media so I could trace and learn faster. In fact, a helpful poster took a look at my routine and suggested that my routine should look more like “1/4 geometric shapes (not just boxes and cylinders) in perspective, 1/4 studying drawings you like, preferably while cross-referencing similar IRL reference material to better understand why the artist made the stylistic choices he did and where he made genuine mistakes and 2/4 studying photos of various things”. In the new learning method to trace to learn, I usually do two drawings. First, a very simple one for the main posture and limbs, and then a more detailed one with more details and perspective. Can someone evaluate my work? I would like to know if I’m following the right path. I have observed that studying the structure of a body from a picture is usually harder than studying a drawing, maybe the artist applied some exaggerations or simplifications.
