I don't understand this hobby. Do you play with the toys and form entirely new stories with them? Or are they entirely for display, more like art collecting.

I used to play with them with my big brother even as adults we'd talk about story possibillites and character shit with our figures. but he's married now and his wife doesn't even want him talking to me. he's a cucked bitch and it makes my figures look lifeless and unused. I have a gf but I miss customizing figures with my bro and even making dio comics with him. fuck that loser he's a huge pussy and piece of shit.

Nowadays it's more like collecting them and changing up the poses once in a while. I do action figure photography and that makes me feel more creative and more like I'm actually using the money I spent also. It sounds really really snobby but it kinda IS like collecting art, in a way.

I mean it's a little bit of everything you described. I like the collecting aspect, filling out a roster of my favorite team or finding that one figure I've been looking for. I also like the display aspect. Setting up cool looking shelves and displays of all your favorites. I'm also into toy photography so while I'm not outright playing with my toys like I did as a child, I've tried and i can't do it with my adult brain, but I set up little scenes that either try to replicate something from whatever IP the figures are from, or to tell my own little story within the picture. Toys can be expressive just as much as anything.

I buy them but I don't play with them "physically". I store them in boxes but now that I know I "have" them and could potentially grab them at any moment and interact with them I can safely imagine scenes in my head with them.Otherwise anxiety kicks in and I can't imagine scenes with toys I don't have.

Playing for me is just posing them with different accessories or nee poses. Rearranging stuff for new displays. Partswapping modular stuff. MOCing and building lego and Gunpla etc

That's part of why people that complain about articulation or kibble or parts forming are so funny, because 99% of collectors just line their toys up on a cheap shelf.HoweverLego and transformers collectors do actually play with their toys in that a Lego collector will usually build the set and a tf collector will transform the toy.There is also cross over with flower arrangements and photography as some collectors will display their toys in variation action scenes like a person arranging flowers. Arranging the items to form a scene is the hobby. Some will go a step further and take photos.I dont think many actually play with their toys a make up scenes. I imagine adults, if they are doing this, just write fanfiction or game.

They're like sculptures that you can change yourself, I have toys on my desk and I change their poses up. It's kind of like if you were a fashion photographer getting your models to hit different poses. Or a director and you're making a scene.
The paint detail on some of them is incredible, in terms of art they are a lot more entertaining to look at than the posters on my wall.
I don't have the money to be a "collector" though, I just have a few and like looking at anons images.

Statues just sit there as static art and possibly increase in value.Toys are pure imagination made into physical form. You don't understand what an action figure truly is if you have to ask. What you're holding in your hand isn't just a piece of plastic with joints. It's someone's vision, a team's combined effort to being that vision into reality so that a child's (anyone's) imagination can capture that vision and expand on it.You live in a world where everything is shown to you on a screen and your brain doesn't work for it. You play a video game and have set rules and boundaries. You watch a show or movie and it's all flashy but it's defined and played out, you have no control. But take a figure and hold it, move it, imagine it doing anything. Have Snake Eyes fighting Megatron. Make your Battle Beasts live in the Ewok'a treetop village.I came from a time (70's) where we played outside with GI Joe figures and when the street flooded I got out the Hovercraft and SHARK and floated them around by the curb. I had the original NES but set up elaborate hour-long adventures with my TMNT figures. Even pople from the 90's remember their Power of the Force Star wars figures. Their Kenner Aliens and Terminator lines. It's why NECA did homage series to those and you can find Jurassic Park retro stuff at Target. X-Men 97 is a huge hit. Because back then we had adventures in our minds and toys allowed us to cultivate our imaginations to achieve even greater heights.LED screens have replaced all that and it's dumbed down our population. Pick up an action figure. Imagine what it could do. Visualize the process of its origination and the fact that a person/team with the design power to work at Ferrari decided to creature a tiny hand-held version of something they thought of rather than a luxury car.
