Looking at the 40K pic I can see other areas have painted mins. LGS seemed to pick a pretty bad area. I mean considering orcs got a refresh it means that these are new orc kits so it can take some time to paint it. You can also see about 5 unpainted minis in the battletech game as well.The terrain is the bigger one. The battletech terrain looks nice. While 40K is just bunch of bare MDF terrain thanks to the fucking L shaped wall shit we are all living through.

You know, it might not look it, but the 40k board is much better for actual gaming!Sure, it might *look* less appealing than the Battletech board, but let's actually think about it. The Warhammer board has the following advantages over the Battletech board >actual cover and terrain in the middle, encouraging maneuver >superior terrain is in the center, encouraging immediate conflict >the terrain blocks LOS, allowing for distinct flanksFrom sensible terrain placement you can create an immediately action-packed game with multiple evolving fronts. Meanwhile the Battletech game will be a series of random potshots from behind cover, until whoever rolled better wins.

Good looking terrain is aesthetically pleasing but provides a worse gameplay experiencefor example, pic related yes, obviously, left looks better than right, no one is going to disagree with that. but when playing a GAME, right is obviously going to be a funner experience for BOTH sides, just look at the utter lack of balance in the left terrain set up. the near side has to traverse a river and then fight through open fields while the far side immediately gets access to most the hard cover of buildings on the map and on top of that gets the hedgerows overlooking the open fields. its blatantly not fair and poorly set up.>but just give the attack side more units! ok then, how do you balance that? how do you know how many points to allocate to balance out the terrain advantage? double? triple? what if thats too much and now the attacker has the distinct advantage? its way too much trouble to figure out. thats why tourney tables will always provide the better gameplay experience for BOTH sides. GAMEplay. WarGAMES. These are GAMES. A good game needs to be fun for all involved. It is not fun when one side has an inherent advantage over the other. There is a reason why 40k tournaments are by and far the most popular wargaming events and playstyle over every single alternative."I'm glad you posted BT as a comparison because look at the average BT player. They arguably play on the ugliest paper hex mats and hex counter terrain in wargaming, despite the fact that playing BT with physical and 3d terrain has existed for decades. The average warhammer player is mentally inferior and not in the mindset of actual tabletop game players because they approach it as a competitive video game instead. Let's look at the profile of the modern 40k player: >Painting The average warhammer player does not care about painting. To them, painting is a chore. It is not enjoyable, and it serves no intrinsic purpose or reward. The only reason to paint miniatures is that some tournament rules require it, thus they resort to the lowest effort, fastest speedpainting methods. Sometimes they won't even do that, and will pay a guy at their local store to put contrast paint on their models for them. YouTube shorts and playing the same skinnerbox video game over and over every night takes up their time instead, yet they will call this "I don't have enough time after work" in attempt to excuse their behavior to anyone who calls them out. >List building and gameplay The idea of playing a wargame for anything but trying to figure out the most effective unit combinations to win tournament games with is completely foreign to the warhammer player. A themed list, custom characters, simulationist scenarios, or narrative gaming will never be seen among the warhammer player unless it unintentionally happens in matched play. If Auspex Tactics or some slob in an esports jersey says a unit is not worth taking, then it is true, and they will tell other hobbyists to not take them either if they showcase any interest in the models. >Terrain Terrain serves no purpose outside of being required for gameplay. Visuals do not matter at all, and ensuring they're balanced for tournaments matters above all else. Thus the warhammer player buys the option that merges cheapness with requiring no effort to build or paint: unpainted MDF ruins. It's all a matter of scale. Of course some obscure wargame with 10 players can afford to have casual terrain work because literally who cares if something's imbalanced or uncompetitive.When your product can host tournaments that need to be played by thousands of players all over the world you're gonna have to set some standards.

The best 40k table is still significantly better than the best /awg/ and /hwg/ table. It's the most popular wargame so obviously it has orders of magnitude more "ugly" tables, but it also has orders of magnitude more elite painters and terrain builders.Also look at boomers play their historical games. 99/100 times their games are just felt mats, felt roads, felt green patches that are considered tree area terrain, felt felt felt and more felt. This board would call that soul though, even though it looks like shit.
