In OD&D, BECMI, 1e and 2e D&D that would have been classed as "Plate Mail" roughly the equivalent to AC 17 unenchanted with only "Field Plate" (AC 18) and "Full Plate" (AC 19) armors being better. Suit of Field Plate and Full Plate were described as having cloth padding as part of the armor as well.
