Have you ever played a "mean" character? Is being "mean" alignment restricted?

Generally it's harder to justify a Good mean person as (unless they're retarded) they'll realise they're making life shit for innocent people over time.

Yes, he started off as the not!kaiba of a perfect draw game but honestly he's become one of the more well-adjusted characters. I've cleared most of his baggage at this point bar one related to the party imploding because another PC tried to kill a man and the first one related to his sister who has generic anime disease. He's thriving, he's actually making friends, and somehow is not the edgiest motherfucker in the party.

Yes, right now I am in the middle of two campaigns where I play a mean character. One is a greedy cynical gambling addict that lost the remains of his empathy after a close encounter with a cosmic horror entity, he still is considered a force of good because he hunts monsters even worse than himself.
The other character is a corporate bitch that cares only about money and status but that's a given for a cyberpunk character.
Those two are rather exceptions to the rule, I mostly play friendly PCs, even when I play a selfish character, they tend to act friendly at least on the surface. Sometimes they are sycophants or stoic and detached but polite.

I don't play D&D.

STERN comes off as mean when you're a whiny bitch.

A lot of my characters will make cutting remarks or indulge in very mild cruelty against their enemies, like rubbing a rival's face in a recent failure. But as a general rule, they prefer to be nice. There was one exception, though. A dangerously satisfying one-shot. The character was a hulking meat-head, literally the most unintelligent character I've ever played. A brutish bully. The GM made the character specifically to see how I'd play him.And damn, this asshole was actually really fun. He came up with mean names for every PC and NPC, or else intentionally got their names wrong. He took pleasure in threatening and roughing up anyone weaker than him. He solved puzzles through impulsive actions or by shoving it off on one of the nerds in the team. He laughed at clever jokes... about 5 seconds after everyone else. He was quick to violence, and casual about murder. He snapped a woman's leg like a twig, and teased a blind man who had just lost his eyes. Even slipped a little sexual harassment in there (my wife was in that game and was willing to play along). And all these qualities were rewarded when, at the climax of the story, his internal ugliness transformed him into a literal monster.
