In my setting Trolls are said to be borne of the cursed union of the god of the orcs and the god of the dwarfs, they are stone-like with rough rocky exteriors and not inherently dumb or violent, in fact many often find work as mercenaries and guards in the border reaches where the land is poorly settled and dangerous, but they have a prodigious appetite. They eat as an adult human as a child, and that only increases as they grow in size and age. Their rapid metabolism does allow them to heal, even severed limbs can heal eventually, but they need to eat, and can seemingly live forever as long as they eat. Eventually, however, a troll will die if only because it eventually has to consume more food than is actually possible for it to, either because it simply strips the land barren and starves, or because its hunger drove it to devour or attempt to devour a companion, employer, or a generally sentient creature whose own companions took umbrage with that and hunted down and slew it.When trolls die, they turn to true stone, though this is believed to be a curse. It does keep the cannibalism down, however, but not the murder, as in wildlands trolls are fiercely territorial and keep small numbers, usually only 1-3 trolls can wander in a given area at a time without completely scouring it of fodder. Five or more trolls working together is generally considered cause for alarm as they might just be gearing up to loot a nearby village of all the food and that includes the people in the village. Even the most well equipped and funded mercenary bands still can’t keep a lot of trolls on payroll because trolls eat a LOT and while they might fight like two men, a constantly fighting troll eats like five. A veteran older troll might fight like five men but eat like ten.
