Can it be done? Especially since the kids contribute basically nothing except encouragement?

It already exists. Digimon Digital Adventures. I've been playing since 1.2 and it is legitimately one of my favorite TTRPGs.1.4 if you want something higher power with fewer restrictions that's complete.2E if you're fine with a WIP that's more balanced overall, even if every character is slow as shit because the dev for some reason is afraid of anyone moving at more than a crawl (there are some experimental tweaks currently not in the main doc that mostly fix this though, it's just a running joke that 2e movement is historically ass).>1.4

Yes.

This is one big reason I haven't made a Digimon TTRPG. I do want to make a monster battling system eventually, but one in which the human partner/trainer/destined/whatever has a more prominent battle role.

Monsters and Other Childish Things is probably a decent way to try and capture that, if you want something simpler than Digimon Digital Adventures. Still has the monsters doing the bulk of the work, but handles stats and abilities a lot more loosely so that you don't need a specific list of numbers for thousands of different digimon.

I ran 3 adventures for my party in digimon, each one having a human that worked differently while everyone else played Digimon.First human was solely a buff and debuff monster using a system similar to the cards from Tamers. They ended up fusing with Yggdrasil and becoming God, but while they were remaking reality they got attacked by something right as the game ended.Second was similar to Masaru and could punch out digimon with the best of them. THey ended up taking Atlasmon's place holding up the Server and keeping reality trucking along, but they're stuck there, unaging(any age they gain powers the server) and are constantly taunted and tempted by Zeusmon to "put down their burden" which would end reality.The last one had 2 humans, but they fused with the Digimentals Kamen Rider style and fought Ogudamon in space after he had eaten the Amaterasu server. They were forced to dive him into the sun which DID kill him, but now the Amaterasu server is powered by the two Golden digi-eggs they had to use to beat Ogudamon. If the energy(their willpower) fades they die then reality dies. obviously theres a multiverse at work heregame 4 is gonna tie all these together and answer the question of whos been Blackening digimon through all 3 games

Digimon is a tamagotchi, the book-keeping for evolutions would simply be unfun.
