03/24/26, 01:40No.153981545 Many leagues, particularly in the UK, established their seasons in the 19th century to complement cricket, which was the designated summer sport. I have been told that this, in turn, was at least partially based on the economic rhythm of a year to a degree, harvest shit and so on. In the past, people lived much closer in sync with the seasons than nowadays, as you can buy summer fruits in winter and so on. So it became a custom and spread elsewhere as well, even without cricket being a thing.
Also, contact sports and endurance-based sports are safer and more manageable in colder weather than hot weather. At least that's how many people saw it in the past, I think you can also argue against it
Scandinavian and South American football leagues play in a calendar year because they either have milder summers or entirely swapped seasons compared to the northern half of the planetPersonally, I'd kind of prefer a calendar year season from March to November or something. You'd still hold big international tournaments in summer
