Because the math-textbook industrial complex needs to make infinite yearly new editions of books with the same content reshuffled over and over again. Old textbooks don't rake in cash. But who knows, maybe I'm just antisemetic.

Because it doesn’t do the job.Imagine a normal average guy. Do you think after completing Lang’s Basic Mathematics he can tackle serious intro books like Spivak Calculus? The answer is no.Now imagine a bright student with aptitude in math, did contests, IMO and whatnot. Does he need Lang’s Basic Mathematics? Lol no.That’s the main issue with this book. Dumb and normal students need more help beyond this book, while the smart students don’t need it.I really doubt anyone who praised the book has actually gone throught the book, while I did. People just see “Serge Lang” and the TOC and the typesetting and assume it’s a good book.

you learn through rote repetition so you need more exercises than are given in that book which acts more as a summary.

Because its published by springer and that means it probably costs $9000 per book.
