I've heard that allergic reactions probably evolved in humans to deal with parasitic infections. Parasites used to be EXTREMELY common and most people were infected with multiple for their entire life, and parasites would use tricks like blending in with your natural biology to trick your immune system. As a result mammals had to develop very aggressive reactions that would attack what appears to be your own body if they catch a wiff of parasite.In the past it was very valuable and helped us survive but these days parasites are way more rare since we tend to not drink out of stagnant ponds or eat rotting carcasses as often, but the extreme reactions are still hiding in your body ready on a hair trigger
