It's probably the type of simplification that has to be found once large enough scales become normal parts of scientific consideration.
It's not that the math itself is so obvious, but that the abstract concepts of mass, energy, force, acceleration, space, time, light, etc are all going to be part of the overall physical understanding that advanced species possess.
If there is a realization that both space and time need to be relative in order to preserve causality at scale then general relativity is the inevitable conclusion that resolves the problem.
