It depends on the nature of the depression, which I basically categorize as physical, bored, sad and despair (these can overlap with each other).
Physical just means you have issues with your brain chemistry full stop, these are extremely rare but do occur, and can be alleviated through chemical intervention.
Bored depression is pretty much what it says on the tin, you're just bored of life, and with that eventually comes an apathy towards existence, it can usually just be alleviated through engagement with activities you find enjoyable (if the activities you usually find so aren't, do something different).
Sad depression is an emotional reaction to outside stimuli, which can range from not getting your favourite cake that day, to seeing your friend's head get blown off in front of you. Highly dependent on both your emotional sensitivity and the stressor, if the scarring is too intense it may necessitate CBT and/or chemical intervention.
Despair is the realisation that life is a waste of time, either yours or all life, and that you may as well be dead. Highly dependent on the intellectual depth of the person's belief in this apparent reality.
The symptoms can be softened somewhat through chemical intervention, but to truly fix the problem would require a complete refutation and replacement of their beliefs on life, and speaking from personal experience, nobody has an answer beyond religion, which I also reject as an answer.
