Hey I'm not sure if you're still monitoring this thread but I just wanted to write you and let you know that losing a pet is one of the hardest things you will ever go through. The unconditional love that they provided to you is something that will live in your heart for the rest of time, and will only grow stronger with age.
I'm really sorry to hear about your loss. I've always adopted animals from a young age so it is something I have gone through time and time again, there is no silver bullet or catch all solution for the pain. Even as I write this the loved ones I miss come rushing to mind.
I find what has helped me in the past is associating the pets to different periods of time in my life. The chapter in which your dog was with you is over, as sad as that is. You are a new, changed person as a result of your grief. Use that change towards a new routine, a new habit, and build upon it to improve your life.
If your heart is open to the idea, eventually consider rescuing another dog. There are millions of homeless animals across the United States who could use a warm, loving home and it sounds as though you have one that you gave your pet for many years.
I love you, stranger. Please stay strong. You will never forget your friend.
