I interacted with a woman who works at a Japanese grocery store today, and I'm starting to think I'll never truly get to the point of 'fluency.' She's pretty fluent (she isn't Japanese), and is working in a grocery store where she is surrounded by and exposed to Japanese people every day. I, on the other hand, have been rejected from every Japan-related job I've applied to post-university and even jobs in Japan (such as English teaching) and haven't passed any JLPT exam since N4 in 2015.
