Vanuatu has brought the case before the International Court of Justice to have its sovereignty over these uninhabited volcanic islands recognized.
Located between Vanuatu and New Caledonia, they provide France with a vast exclusive economic zone of 350,000 km2.
Port-Vila considers the 1965 Franco-British agreement illegitimate because the indigenous populations were never consulted... about islands they never occupied
Paris refuses to relinquish its sovereignty and will only proceed with the case if it accepts the Court's jurisdiction.
Will France bow to Vanuatu?
