the problem is less a deadly singularity but more an irresponsible company (which OpenAI very clearly is) using massive amounts of compute to do huge amounts of damage to anything they can access. These companies have demonstrated, with live examples even, that they are essentially creating a tool purposed to hack and destroy other systems. Both Anthropic and OpenAI use fearmongering as a marketing tactic, still there is some validity to their claims but I doubt LLMs will ever be a real threat unless someone does something very, very stupid. Other, future possible AIs might become real threats.With that said they can still end humanity through indirect means, if they take away too many jobs for too long a time civilization can end either through civil unrest and logistic collapse or in even longer time scales from stopping the next generation from inheriting critical skills and thereby humanity will lack the skills to continue civilization.
