When are we getting a camera with a cross-shaped sensor or an oversized square sensor with dark corners? This should already be the standard on the tiny smartphone sensors so I don't have to rotate my phone

Action cameras are doing this for full gate recording that can be cropped either to horizontal or vertical It's a stupid compromise for still photography, above 20 Mpx you can already comfortably crop an horizontal pic out of a vertical one

Why does everyone hate squares? >Yields largest possible image field without vignetting for an image sensor of convex shape with only 90deg corners and straight corners allowed Everything other than 1:1 sacrifices total field of view by necessity. 1:1 has plenty in both directions to crop to landscape or portrait if desired. It's literally perfect and I'm tired of pretending it isn't.
