The true redpill is professionals put their kit in padded plastic cases and everyone else only needs one camera and one lens on a strap and maybe some other gizmo (tripod or smth) thrown somewhere in a normal backpack along with their lunch

Only real advantage is easier side/top camera access and integrated cube. You can just get camera cube(s) + normal backpack. PD cubes are some of my favorite as they're a tad taller for medium lenses to stand vertically, or cameras to fit on their side, but that does limit bag options.

Why all of these "tech" bags are so ugly? I hate modern world for it's boner for "functionality" only like pre-modern people didn't understand. They knew beauty makes the life and world a little bit more bearable. That's why they beautified all of their products. Where we just mass produce trash design with gray scale "colors". No doubt this century is not for the sensitive souls.

Backpack + cube is the only solution that isn't asperg-tier. Either you sneed a sling and a pack of shit to shoot profeshonally, or you need a backpack and a cube at most. Even when I take my hiking kit, the camera stuff is max 1/4 the interior pack size.

Honestly I don't understand how people can use bags instead of backpacks. Each time I go to some event or convention, I have to take, camera with either 24-70 or 24-120mm (sonny my -120 is f/4 and -70 is 2.8, I often take the first one), 70-200 2.8 (in case I would have to shoot scenes from larger distances), flash, battery for flash and spare for camera, some water, sandwich and similar small stuff. If I would take it all in a bag, my arm would scream after hour or two meanwhile good backpack allows me to go like this without issues. Even if I only need one lens of choice (like when during travel when it's usually 24-120 f/4 universal one, sometimes accompanied with 50mm 1.8 because it's so small and light), backpack is simply much more convenient.But I'm just an amateur. I saw professional guys carrying few bags, tripod and light meters with them and two bodies with them so maybe I'm just too green for that.

Been using a 6l peak design sling for a z8 and 2 primes for the past few years and it has been perfect. I did get a Wandrd rogue sling as well for some hiking that I wanted a bit better shoulder padding. Just get whatever bag feels best in the camera store and ignore the bag autists.

How is the Peak Design messenger bag? I was looking for something relatively weather proofed against light rain and can hold a Nikon Z8, 24-120mm f4, and one or two voigtlander primes. The peak design messenger bag looked perfect but I was curious if anyone had any suggestions that wasn't a fugly backpack.

I've handled a ton of backpacks and bags as I buy and sell a lot of gear. One tell tale sign if the manufacturer has any idea what they are doing is whether or not the zipper thingies have a rubber coating or are designed in a way that suppresses noise as you are walking around.. if metal parts keep clanking when you are out it becomes tiresome and annoying quickly.. If it makes noise it is just a stupid, cheaply made product, if it doesn't they put some thought into it.
If there is one product in the camera market that is entirely the buyers market then camera bags is it. I am sure pretty much any shop that takes trade-ins etc have a bunch laying around that is available for next to nothing if you ask because people who are getting rid of their old gear usually don't give a carp.

I bought a 1 pound solo travel backpack. Chuck in a sleeve that holds a DSLR with zoom lens and called it a day. I try to go as light as possible so I don't bring extra lenses. Just quick shots, eat good food, and talk to cuties on my travels

I'm sick of sling bags over the shoulder, so I'm thinking of getting the Spider Holster for when I want the camera accessible.Or a waist bag like the Mountainsmith Tour Lumbar Pack when walking around. On the picture, the straps are optional if you're carrying less than 10lbs.All the popular bag brands, Peak Design, Wandrd, Wotancraft, have sling bags that could easily convert to waist bag. Sling bag is the current youthful fashion. I think waist carry will make a comeback, per the usual two-decade cycle.

camera cubes are legit the stupidest idea i've ever seen
if i'm bringing a "camera bag" i don't want to have to fish a smaller compartment out of my pack, unzip that cube somewhere stable, and only then do i get to my polar filter or a microfiber wipe
if i'm carrying a "camera" bag, it needs to provide me with access to what i need, when i need it
