why do people say the desert smells good when it rains?
i was out in Arizona and Utah and whenever it rained it smelled like a public urinal

it didn't rain enough then. the AIR smells great but only after the SOIL smell subsides with enough moisture.

Rain aerosolizes oil collected on rocks and terpenes made by plants and microorganisms. That all mixes together into a scent called petrichor which is more distinct in arid places because of microorganisms in the topsoil that normally tolerate dry conditions.
Evolutionary biologists believe people love that scent because it helped our ancestors find water and know when rain is coming.
