Rain aerosolizes oil collected on rocks and terpenes made by plants and microorganisms. That all mixes together into a scent called petrichor which is more distinct in arid places because of microorganisms in the topsoil that normally tolerate dry conditions.
Evolutionary biologists believe people love that scent because it helped our ancestors find water and know when rain is coming.

If you want good smells go look for desert rivers and washes that get water sometimes. They have such a wonderful scent. It's like what laundry detergent and shit was going for but failed to achieve. This applies to rivers in a lot of areas, not just deserts.
