What's the best form of self defense you can get outside of a firearm? I've been looking at things like high powered CO2 kinetic round launchers and lower powered pepper ball launchers, but I'm not entirely sure that kind of thing would be effective at stopping much of any kind of threat.
I'd like to think the pepper balls would be more effective at stopping a human threat, maybe there isn't a kinetic round launcher out there that's powerful enough to work without being just a gun. I'd also like to ward off wild animals and violent dogs. Any ideas?

Pcp air rifles can shoot a .177 or .22 pellet at 1000fps and allows for multiple shots. The pellets don't have near the mass or energy of a 22lr round. But it's as close as you're going to get in a firearm style weapon. Upside, you can keep the tank pressurized and the rifle ready to go. Downside, you're not walking around town with it. And when you are somewhere you'd want to, it's not light.CO2 pistols can't be kept ready to fire long term. You don't want to keep the CO2, pressurized, in the system for longer than 48 hours, 24 recommended. Otherwise it'll corrode the o-rings and eventually destroy them.Pepper spray can be carried most places and can be stored ready to go long term.

Defense against what, exactly? Also, if you live in a place with lousy gun laws then you probably live in a place with lousy self defense laws, so read up on those. I live somewhere with shitty gun laws, still managed to get a gun, but for all intents and purposes can’t use it. Granted, my country doesn’t have niggers so I don’t really need to use it but still.

if you pull out an air pistol you run the risk of them pulling out a real pistol. flintlocks and zip guns are an option, but I wouldn't recommend having an illegal gun. learning to fight is smart, learning to avoid a fight is smarter.

mace / pepper spray is extremely effective and has the benefit of being much more socially acceptable to carry and use than a gun (or anything that looks like a gun), knife, baton, etc

Copfag, out of all the less lethals, OC spray is the most effective and practical. Everything attacking you is going to have eyes and getting that shit in your eyes is hell.For tasers you need the actual probe shooting ones to get a good probe spread, and heavy clothing negates them.Pepperball guns, even the bigger paintball gun style ones, are a joke. Annoying for about 5 seconds then the OC dust dispersed and you're good.Beanbag shotguns are what we use on bears when they break into houses, they're effective in getting them to fuck off from a safe range.I've had all of these used against me except beanbag shotguns. I hate tasers the most because those 5 seconds feel like you're in hell. But the probe spread has to be good, and carrying around a taser is not practical. OC works, just be careful on backblast, especially when hiking at elevation (think what happens to a pressurized can at high elevation). Also carry a size MK2 or above, small keychain ones won't even cover one eye. You have to think multiple attackers.

and if you live in a gun lawed country, they still allow hunting and hunting is often done with dogs. dogs are not stupid they see you bring out the gun they can go full on adhd crazy and run around themself in exitement over the fact they are going hunting and forget everything they need to do to actually be usefull doing the hunt. so many hunters go on regular hikes with their dogs carrying their rifle or shotgun just to train the dog into it, get it used to it. not every hike with a gun = a kill. this is an accepted practice and none will check if you actually got that shit loaded with bear slugs.......

I killed a deer with a steel baton. It was a coup de grace, it had two broken legs with bones sticking out and wouldn't have made it. But the first blow to the back of the head did it. Even a bear getting smacked in the face/head/arms by one of those by a strong and determined human is gonna do some damage. Yours is a toy, I've been shot by them it does not stop, only annoys and possibly deters.
