I usually don't bother with boots because they're tedious to put on and I don't roll my ankle in trail runners etc. That said, are cowboy boots ok for /out/? I'm guessing it's blistertown, but at least they must be fast and easy to wear?

Those are designed for working on flat turf or bare dirt.

you don't roll your ankles YET
also cuff height has no effect on ankle stability
let me type it again
CUFF HEIGHT HAS NO EFFECT ON ANKLE STABILITY
you are only wearing high top hikers because your grandparents did
low cut approach shoes are better in literally 90% of usecases
>inb4 muh winter
yes high cuffs are nice in winter, that's why I said 90%

They're like wellies really, but wellies are objectively nicer

I spent 3 hours chasing horses in the canadian rockies one time, wearing my cowboy boots. Didn't get blisters and it wasn't super unconfortable. They're not great for hiking cause you can't adjust how tightly they fit around your foot like you can with boots with laces.
I only wore the cowboy boots because we had a 10 hour ride ahead of us, and riding in cowboy boots is vastly preferable to riding in hiking boots.

You know that joke about cowboys dieing with their boots on? It's because cowboy boots are so tight they are a pain to take off so they sleep with them on. Hell, Frank Zappa wrote a song about how annoying taking off cowboy boots is.

they are best if you are going to be in and out of a vehicle/bike/horse/etc and don't need super deep tread
flat leather is unironically pretty grippy on most surfaces honestly, just not great for mud which is a good chunk of hiking terrain
I personally prefer cowboy boots on gravel and soil, something about the flat sole keeps me from slipping around as the tread settles in other hiking shoes. Sand is hell though, I would derive great pleasure from forcing people to walk across a beach in cowboy boots because they are just that horrible

I got a pair of ropers, I think (Red Wing 1155) because I like going to places where country music is played and beer is drunk, and I wanted something to slip on. Used them this summer, walking not more than 15000 steps per day in a city, so hard surfaces.
I really liked the last, as it was wide enough for my Frankenfeet. But the looseness around my ankles felt weird. The boots fit well enough, but the shaft was loose. The fit on my feet felt like wearing loafers, but the shaft felt more like carrying dead weight since it's loose. Don't really get that with my regular lace-up boots. Seems to me like you could roll your ankles perfectly well in them. Twice as heavy as my leather shell boots too. Haven't tried the sole enough outdoors to mean much about it, but it seems alright.
But they do have attitude in spades, and they're great for slipping on as a summer boot.
I wouldn't wear them for walking in difficult terrain, but I could see it working on trails or leisurely strolls.

ive hiked for 5 hours in and out in cowboy boots. its dooable.
i did wear a hole in the leather sole, but the boots were quite worn and needed a new sole anyway.

i wear cowboy boots daily but i have an old pair of ropers i use for the woods. I went on a 3 mile trail hike and was fine. I live in east texas and mainly bush whack the woods though, which means no stamped down trail, just dense forest/swamp with tons of sticker bushes, thorny plants and vines, and snakes. There’s no way i’m wearing regular shoes or sandals anymore for trudging through the swampy woods where i live. I’ve done it a few times and twice barefoot but i move so slowly because i don’t want to get snake bit or swing my leg into stinging nettles or thorny vines. my friend went barefoot too once and 3 minutes into it got a 3/4 inch thorn stuck under his foot, he’s known to be reckless. As long as the boots are worn in and they’ve got tread on the sole you should be fine. I wouldn’t take those stiff smooth bottom dancing boots
