A novel read if you're looking for New Age musings on nature with botanical science mixed in, I could have done with less of the chapters with her cringy students, howeverpicrel will demystify your escapism a little in your hikes

Alicia Bay Laurel wrote two great books while living at the morning star ranch commune in northern California in the 70s. "Living on the earth" the first of the two concerns more practical matters like food, shelter and survivalism but the companion book "Being of the sun" is my favorite of the two, it covers spiritual aspects of living with nature, there's a heavy emphasis on nudity and both books are hand written and illustrated in a folksy endearing style. If everyone could read these and hear these messages the world would be a happier place

Butcher’s Crossing by John Williams is a great piece of historical fiction about a college grad accompanying a group of buffalo hunters to experience the wild. If you want a shorter read, I recommend “the Cannibal Owl” by Aaron Gwyn. I also finished Annihilation by Vandermeer which gets into science fiction, but it takes place in a rich and easy to visualize world based on the St. Mark’s wildlife refuge in Florida.

need to continue reading this. it's really good, even if you never cared about mount everest like me or the actual author of the book (who also wrote into the wild and was a profilic journalist for outside magazine). the premise is that jon krakauer gets the chance to report on mount everest tourism in the early 2000s, i think, and decides to do it, regardless of what he thinks of it. super interesting book on the commercialisation of mt everest and reaching the summit.

If you're into fly fishing, anything by John Geireach is a knockout, that guy is so fucking cozy to read.Oh, and if you haven't read the Curtis Creek Manifesto, that should be considered required material to getting into the sport hahaha.Good luck on the thread, could be a nice one. I've got Braiding Sweetgrass on my "To Read" shelf, looking forward to it.I really enjoyed Deep Survival and Down the Great Unknown, both have some awesome accounts of survival against the odds. Down the Great is really interesting too if you're unfamiliar with the history around Glen Canyon, man JW Powell makes some awesome observations about that place, too bad it's fucked now.Desert Solitaire is up the same tree as Sand County Almanac, but a bit less "Wisdom from the greatest conservationist of all time" and a bit more "polemic from a guy who was a ranger for 2 years". Abbey is still solid and has fantastic prose, but there's a few points he makes that are often contradictory or a tad snooty.Eitherway, I liked almost all the books from the outdoor section of my library here, and recommend most. The 1970's GI survival guide is an easy skip.
