It depends on if I think there will actually be anyone out there to check permits.Most national parks require backcountry permits year round, but only during the summer doing they actually have staff going around checking they backcountry. So I never get one outside of the summer season. And during the summer I only get them in popular areas.

I got trespassed from the North Cascades NP for 2 years because they caught me without a permit camping and then claimed litter they had found along campsites i was near was from me. Also got a heft fine and was forced to hike out with them at their pace.

Most of the permitting bottlenecks are on roads and parking lots. If you hike, ride a pedal bike, or ride a horse in then none of that shit matters since the permit checkers usually check parking lots.

When through Shenandoah no permit fuck em, hiked the smokies without a permit and camped where I wanted. What are they gonna do? Have a fatass town cop hike up a few mountains and arrest you? If rangers give you shit just ignore them

If they're required. Keeps the worst of the worst away. I like my public lands too, but they're admittedly less pristine because of the rabble.

Ive talked to rangers several times on hikes and mainly have been asked where im planning on camping, if i have a bear cannister, etc. but i’ve only been asked to show my backcountry permit once. I’ve even considered photoshopping my past permit since it seems like they dont really check the actual document too thoroughly. I backpack mainly in the eastern sierras for reference.
