How is the alice backpack im comparison to whats out today? Its affordable here in europe for around 80€ and I got into the whole outdoor topic with the game DayZ where its very prominent.
So I thought I might aswell and military stuff is good? Guess it might be a bit heavy?

Compared to a modern pack, ALICE is short and wide and carries the load too far from your body. The frame only has a kidney pad, not a supportive waist belt, and the torso length is about right for a 5'3" manlet.

Use a medium Alice on a Mollie frame with the pouches and extra bits.

they're garbage, op. anyone who tells you they arent garbage has never actually used one. i carried one for a couple years when i was a teenager and they were dirt cheap and they absolutely suck. these days you can get a fine pack from walmart or ali express for the same price that will carry much better.

Its ok but not great. Yes its durable and more useful for activities where you need carry a lot, but the consumer pack market has way outpaced it the past decades. you can get way more comfy and functional packs with way less health issues at good prices. If you want to do it for a video game larp then larp away but there are better options for non-larping. Also military stuff isnt inherently good, it is gear built for the mission, not for the person.

my suspicion is it's fine if you get a good frame, shoulder straps, and hip belt. there are plenty of different options nowadays on LC2 frames, custom alice packs, custom straps, and all kinds of other business. is it worth it though?

It's fine, not great, not terrible. It's a decent starter for people unsure if they want to invest too much in a new hobby. It's smaller than some of the European surplus packs, so it would be hard to overload.

They are OK with a frame. Not great. Our guys cut up sleep pads to make extra padding. Fill it to 75% capacity at most. Also make sure to get a Waterproof bag to line it with.
The ones without frames were used as glorified luggage by people like myself who rode instead of walking everywhere.

I had a small alice, it did not impress me. The internal storage space was too small so I had to put gear on the exterior, which is awful. Those nice pouches are fun but are also clearly designed for mill equipment. Normal people doing long term hikes want considerable more volume and need a larger pack.

It works well, used them myself, just remember if they stay wet they can rot so dry them out well if it rains, inside is usually a plastic pouch, put stuff inside and roll up pouch to keep rain out
