outings with a pipe

Last thread >>2856593 This is a thread for enjoying a pipe while doing outdoor activities. If you ask why this belongs on /out/, you've never spent an evening by the campfire with a pipe silently enjoying the nature around you, and you're missing out. >how to get started Purchase a corn cob pipe (or a cheap briar pipe) and a pouch of Half and Half or Captain Black tobacco from a smoke shop or online. You will need a lighter or match, and something to tamp it with--a large nail works well if you don't have a pipe tool. Fill the pipe with tobacco, pack it down halfway, top it off, pack it down to 3/4, top it off again, pack gently and enjoy. Smoke slower than you think you need to, the tobacco tastes best when it is burning cool. Tamp and re-light as needed. If you still have trouble, try different methods on YouTube until you find one that works for you. >smoking a pipe will give you cancer Originally the Surgeon General found that pipe and cigar smokers, following a careful study of the statistics (at a time when most adults smoked, so they had a good sample size), had insignificant death rate increases. Nowadays, tobacco is being legislated against while hard drugs are being legalized. Put two and two together. Tobacco is just another good thing under attack by the government. >muh weed Not the time or place. Start your own thread. All tobacco users welcome.

I’ve noticed that I tend to avoid my plug cut tobaccos, just because the preparation always seems too inconvenient in my head. But every time I actually smoke them it really isn’t too difficult to prepare and smoke and I’m always left wondering why I avoid them. I need to get over this silly little mental barrier

G.L. Pease blends really are impressively good, and represent some of the best quality leaf that comes out of the cornell & diehl factory. I think GLP even beats out the new Per G. Jensen line through c&d

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but aromatics are so gay and gross. Are you going to paint your nails after you smoke your goopy cherry vanilla maple hazelnut chocolate 0% nicotine blend? Put another ladder on the back of your jeep with ducks across the dash board?

Does anyone have any recommendations for some OTC codger blends? I have half & half, which I quite enjoy every now and then. Trying to decide between getting a tub of Carter Hall or Prince Albert.

have someone here tried to replace these rubber clenchers by some rope or a nylon line? i want to be hand free but i don't want to chew too much on the stem itself, and do so without buying something on the web since i'm away, hence repurposing some line or similar

I love coin cuts so much it’s unreal. Very whimsical, fun to stuff or rub out. Beautiful presentation. Very euphoric when you get a new shipment of de luxe navy rolls or LBF and see all those stacked coins

I’m on the hunt for the new “definitive” pure virginia. It’s such a shame I can’t just go out and get HH Pure VA. C&D’s opening night is close but still not a good match

It was asked in the last thread but I already forgor the answers: charcoal, meerscham, or balsa filters? I have a bunch of 9mm pipes but never use filters. Recently saw a discussion of a guy claiming his vaun dr perl filters give him better Virginia smoking sessions by killing the tongue bite. I’m interested in snagging some

What's the consensus on brair vs pear wood? I've enjoyed cigars for a while and want to dabble into pipes. Looking at the No. 25 Kaiser from Mr. Brog and a Retro Brair Smooth Apple. I've heard that pear heats too quickly/adds a fruity taste.

Sometimes you just have a bad smoke. Beautiful day, wind didn’t look too crazy on the weather app, busted out my tin of salty dogs that I save for special occasions. Supposed to be a delectable evening on paper… Ended up with a breeze JUST consistent enough to blow over the pipe and scatter the baccy on my charring light. Then it just billowed my pipe too much and the whole smoke was too hot and my tongue got burned and I couldn’t taste a thing. Wind cap didn’t help, just caused my pipe to keep going out. Can’t win em all.

Been sitting on a tin of C&D Red Carpet for so long. Was hoping it would blow my socks off and be some sort of cheaper Escudo. It was so mid and meh. Nothing special.

I'd like to try smoking a pipe and wondering what tobacco would be right if I'm the kind of person that loves a nice strong yet smooth cup of french press french roast coffee or 90% dark chocolate with a heavy cabernet. I don't know if there's some similarity between food and smoke strengths and I just don't want a bad first experience

I added two pinches of perique, just enough to add two flat layers, it could probably only do with one. It has the taste of a very rich dark coffee, a creamier haunted bookshop.

Pipe cleaners. Usually I get whatever a local shop is selling. When restocking online, should I go for the branded peterson (or) white elephant ones? Bristles? No bristles? Extra absorbent. Tapered/conical… too many choices

Kajun Kake smells weird, like it has some sort of cheap vanilla or perhaps deertongue addition. Yet I have never seen this discussed anywhere online.

alright, everyone had been awesome answering my questions and you've all been a good help so far, I just have one more. has anyone tried whitluck's pipe on amazon? I've looked into it and there was a reddit post discussing it over a video of a good review by muttonchop piper but it feels ambivalent. is it safe at least? like, has anyone tried it and tasted any weird flavors from factory chemicals, that sort of thing

I am trying to find someone selling vintage blends luke frog morton, Mcclellands or Sutliff but it seems the buy sell and trade on this stuff is incredibly secret. Does anyone have a place they go online for buy sell and trade for pipes and old cellared blends???

Thoughts on pre-cutting a plug into slices/flakes? Obviously if I’m long-term cellaring a blend for like 2, 3… 5+ years I would just keep it in plug form in the original unopened tin. But once a tin has been cracked and I have a glass mason jar to transfer the tobacco into, do you think it’s fine to take my plug and just slice it up for the sake of convenience?

I used to be OBSESSED with VaPerOs. It’s all I smoked. I had a love life with orientals and thought it represented the pinnacle of blending. Now? I think they’re so boring and gimmicky. Mostly just hot air. Get those orientals OUT

To the anon in the last thread that said to just trust the process when trying fold-and-stuff… You’re right. I’ve been putting this off for years. Finally yesterday I tried it with a coin cut. Today with a flake. Wow. It’s easy to pack, it expands and steadily burns slow and cool. And it’s so flavorful.

Just tried Seattle Pipe Club's Plum Pudding. I've had the tin for 4 years. I had forgotten I opened it 2 years ago and it had dried out completely. I rehydrated it a couple months ago but only tried it for the first time today. It was fantastic. The flavor was mild, a little peppery with occasional hints of cinnamon. It stayed lit the whole time and burned well. No tongue bite. It's the first time in years I've had a blend like this, I've mostly been smoking some bulk aromatics I need to go through. I forgot how good pipe tobacco can be. The aromatics I've been smoking are garbage compared to this.

since we talked about lighters last thread i went through another bic and got tired of having plastic junk, and since i'm cheap i didn't want to shell money at a zippo, so i fund for cheap old fuel lighters, an actual ww1 era lighter and a small promotional lighter from the 60s that fit my travel kit

It’s been windy as fuck the last week and a half and I can’t get a call smoke in without burning my pipe red hot. Oh and the wasps flying around me and the max humidity and the 100° weather…. It’s pissing me off. I wish I had a sun room for smoking and a new job and a new life.

Curious to see if anyone else has done the funny noodle press plugs before? First time trying it. this is just 2oz of haunted bookshop per plug, pressed for 5 days, they're visually pleasing and smell faintly of cherry chocoalte and plum. Excited to try.

Have you ever tried a kiseru pipe? I always thought that there's no way they were created for tobacco, they look like something you'd smoke opium out of.

Always after smoking I dump the ash, run a pipe cleaner down from the stem and up into the bottom of the bowl. I’ll then fold that pipe cleaner in half and do a little ream around the inside of the bowl. I don’t really like taking the stem apart, even an hour or two after smoking I usually just let the pipe chill. I TRY to then take the stem apart and do another “deeper clean” with another clean pipe cleaner—especially important for a system pipe where gunk has gotten up into the moisture catch basin and bc my pipe cleaner can’t make it to the bowl in a system pipe. But sometimes I neglect this second “deep clean” and let the pipe sit a couple of days before finally cleaning it and putting it back on my stand. I hope I’m not damaging my pipes by neglecting to fully clean them. Also; I’ve never used a pipe sweetener or other product to do a clean. How does that work? I’d like to get a bottle of Everclear and use that; but how much do I use? Do I soak a pipe cleaner in the ethanol, or just use a sparing amount? Does everclear completely destroy a built-up cake layer, or is it really more for just getting the topmost sour layer out? Let me know any tips on cleaning you’ve found useful over the years

What do yall nwords think about sunbear or toscano puccini? Are they good enough that I should pick them up?I hate this dumb ass streetwear-style drop nonsense, but I am convinced that 8state burley and carolina red flake are really good, so maybe they are reserving some special tobacco for the small batch drops.

I know this sounds rather autistic but I really am tired of getting tongue burn Would the lowest intermission between full puffs be five seconds? Usually I play while smoking so it is a little difficult to have the introspective pipe hold and tasting so it ends up being a lot of sips consecutively
