Ranking the states I've actually been to, and done some /out/ in:S: Arizona, Florida, Wyoming, Nevada, California, Tennessee A (these could be argued to be S tier, in my opinion): Utah, Louisiana, Oregon, Colorado B: North Carolina C D F: Ohio If you live in Ohio you don't really have /out/, it's the only state in the union that just miserably fails at that.

I love my area of Appalachia. As I type this the windows to my home are wide open and I am awash in the scent of the honeysuckle that grows along the fence in my back yard. I bought 10 acres with a 2,000 sq foot house at a very reasonable price. My property is in an area that is mostly national forest and for that reason is very lightly populated. A 200 acre state wildlife sanctuary borders my western property line. Appalachia has a moderate climate, lush vegetation, abundant sunshine and rainfall. We have strong storms that bring heavy rain that quickly pass leading to sunny days. These strong passing storms provide us ample rain while allowing a high percentage of sun during the day. Portions of Appalachia are designated as temperate rain forest. Appalachia has a tremendous amount of freshwater streams and rivers enabling an abundance of fish and wildlife, including large game such as white tail deer, feral pigs and black bears. Appalachia also has a rugged, independent, even rebellious population. Appalachia's rugged terrain, moderate climate, abundant fresh water and game make it a perfect area for the guerrilla war fighter. There are many reasons that US Army Green Berets and Rangers retire to Appalachia. It is a place that calls people steeped in guerrilla warfare home. I've been to all the states, so I can post this with an educated opinion. S Tier is for states with truly unique natural beauty that stands out from the other states. F tier is for the shitholes that are more city than nature. I don't give a fuck if a state has nice parks or one or two tourist destinations if they're exceptionally difficult to reach or enjoy. I fucking hated my time in California and couldn't enjoy one goddamn place I went to. Meanwhile, every methed out ghost town in Arkansas is surrounded by the most beautiful pine forests in the world.

I've been to 46 states at this point. I haven't been to AK, HI, FL, or MO.I have been to every county in CA and NV, and all but 3 in UT. Nevada especially is underrated; there are so many mountains and it's basically the best empty anywhere imo.The variety within and across those three states mogs most of the other states. Only AK can come close-ish and even then the ecosystems aren't as varied.Montana is also incredible to the point where it's almost unreal.I drove across it a couple weeks ago. The Missouri Breaks were something else.I really don't think much of the east coast aside from eastern TN/western NC and parts of W. Va. Those were the only places that felt remotely like home (norcal)WY is lower because most of the state is windswept and when you inevitably get the shits you'll get an opuntia/beavertail cactus in the ass if you aren't careful. I initially thought i'd keep OR in the B-tier but I also drove across it on the same trip and was stunned by what I saw on US-20 and in the wallowas. I'd never set foot in an old growth doug fir forest to that point. and some of that empty forested coastline was something special desu

I've been to both now but I knew these things long before I visited. And especially once you're reasonably well traveled you kind of know what to expect and what your preferences are. Plus seeing photos and videos of places I want to visit is how I spend a lot of my free time. Pretty much never does a place I visit differ significantly from my expectations, doesn't make it any less special to actually go by the way.
