Probably smarter to buy a M57 engined car that is a little bit newer. E60, E90 or E70. The newer you go, the better the engine basically. Stop once they switch over to the N57, it's a dogshit engine that can't take the same abuse. I know, because I've had both.E39, E46 and E53 had the narrow bellhousing M57. Good engines but down on power, you don't want those. The E53 series 2 had the wide bellhousing M57 but they have rear end camber alignment issues, not worth buying now days.On the Merc side of things you can go OM646, OM647 and OM648. The OM642 is also a good engine but at 20 years old, most need the seals on the engine oil cooler done. It's a $15 part but a 6 hour job.

german cars are "reliable" and comfortable but in germany you are never more than a 15min tow truck ride from a dealer. in sweden you are 5h away from one if lucky, you got no reception and the tow truck driver is drunk and fucking your wife so he wont come.
their cars are buildt accordingly.
bmw diesel will run forever but everything will also fail, its mechanicly strong enough but the software will leave you stranded. got one in my landrover and thankfully they dont use bmw software so i can just erase trouble codes with a simple obd dongle.
