The Department of Justice (DOJ) has launched a civil rights investigation into the College of William & Mary over scholarships and student programs that the department alleges favor certain students based on race and ethnicity.
The department’s Civil Rights Division announced the investigation Monday, saying it will examine whether the Virginia-based public university is violating Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, which prohibits schools receiving federal funding from discriminating based on race, color or national origin.
While William & Mary’s scholarship for first-year students that covers at least the full cost of in-state tuition is not for a specific race, the department claims the university gives “top consideration” to applicants with “diverse people and perspectives.”
In a letter to the university sent Monday, the department also highlighted several programs at William & Mary, including at its School of Education.
One was the Martha L. Muguira Fellowship, which it says prefers Hispanic or Latino women, while the Holmes Scholars Program provides mentorship and other opportunities aimed at developing “future education leaders of color.”

The DOJ also flagged the law school’s Lemon Legal Scholars Program, which offers up to five full scholarships to incoming students who have graduated from historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). Another law school scholarship gives preference to HBCU graduates who “contribute to the diversity” of the school, according to the department.“Awarding scholarships or offering coveted opportunities to students based on the color of their skin is illegal and offends the guarantees of our color-blind Constitution,” Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon said in a statement.“We will find out if scholarships or other student benefits at William & Mary favor applicants of certain races. The Department will not turn a blind eye to race-based preferences, however they are packaged or portrayed by universities.”William & Mary has until Sept. 8 to provide documents and other information requested by investigators. If the DOJ ultimately finds a violation and cannot reach an agreement with the college, it could take further action, including filing a civil lawsuit and cutting federal funding.The department’s probe into William & Mary comes as the Trump administration continues its scrutiny of colleges and universities over diversity initiatives and admissions practices.Earlier this month, the DOJ accused Duke University School of Law of discriminating against white and Asian applicants in admissions, alleging the school violated a 2023 Supreme Court ruling that significantly limited the use of race in college admissions.

These are literal children who have never been grocery shopping, they just heard the adults say that food was more expensive.
They also said that an average American house costs several million dollars. Because they have never paid rent or looked at house prices, they just heard adults say that houses are expensive and thought “A million is a big number! I’ll bet a house costs several million dollars!”The “esl shill” bot is the most obvious foreigner. All of his comments are projection. He has been caught multiple times using awkward phrasing and is clueless about the US. He also accused someone of posting from a non-American timezone when they were posting at 10am ET, because he forgot to check what time it actually was in the US.
