The train is doing everything that it's supposed to, by the book, and in almost all cases there were no injured passengers. Though I agree that many of the level crossings at which crashes occur are outdated and ideally should be grade separated. Also, how many people are killed by cars? The NHTSA did a study in 2023. On average, there is a car crash every 5 seconds in the US, half of those cause injuries, and a fatal one occurs every 12 minutes. In many of these cases, the drivers are not doing what they are supposed to (by driving recklessly, speeding, DUI, etc.). There are drivers on the road that are not competent enough for the task (especially during emergency situations), and really shouldn't be driving. But they are because they have to, since there are no alternatives.

Brightline shares the CSX right-of-way at street level (where people are getting hit by the trains). That line has existed for decades (prior to Brightline) with CSX and Amtrak both using it. People are fucking stupid and get themselves run over by trains all the time and it's not the fault of the trains themselves -- cars & trucks can steer and stop/start quickly; trains cannot. Blaming Brightline for these deaths is retarded. Blaming it while ignoring the other users of the line is just standard-procedure incompetent reporting.

I was on an amtrak train (the Silver Meteor) that killed two people (20-24 hours apart).The first person was just north of Richmond, Virginia, a homeless guy, suspected of suicide, or he slipped/fell and couldn't get up in time.
The second person was a woman getting off a commuter train somewhere around hollywood, Florida. She was wearing headphones, got off the commuter train, our train was going through the middle track (3 track section right of way, outer tracks for commuter trains, inner track for freight/amtrak) and she walked off the commuter train onto the center track right as our train was coming through at like 40mph.Overall a decent train trip as my car attendant brought me a bottle of Maker's mark and some glasses and ice after the 2nd person got hit, which helped to pass the ~4 hour delay before reaching Miami.

the old lady one had me thinking maybe some people can just have a blank mind and ignore their surroundings without meaning to. like how plane crashes are a bunch of things going wrong to create the catastrophe most of the time. for example train crossings look the same at the beginning and end of the cycle. just red lights and the same bell ringing tones. maybe they can make them more similar to stoplights. after the end of the train crossing the red lights can turn green for example and play a different sounding/speed tone. you can also add another set of lights on the opposite sides of car travel to give more visual signs to not go through. could also make crossing arms twice as wide

Cycling and walking aren't really that helpful in FL, and not everywhere can be boated to. Rail is the best option. Fencing is a bad plan because it can disrupt wildlife movement.
