The end of ebike terrorism is in sight. Let's not count our chickens before they hatch, but I'm tentatively feeling hopefully about this. During the time that the last thread was up, hundreds of people were killed by ebike fires. We need to put a stop to this. I just hope they make sure to add prison time for people caught with unlicensed ebikes.

I'm honestly okay if they do this and treat e-bikes the same as mopeds. I don't know about New York laws on registering mopeds, though. That's one thing that has varied from state to state in my experience.

Apparently that also applies to objects where assistance kicks in when you pedal and you can't go faster than you can pedal, not just to things with independent throttles. That's stupid.
I guess they're trying to track ownership so they can blame people for starting fires rather than actually do anything about traffic, but when it comes to batteries, I'm pretty sure the consensus has been that it's almost always the manufacturer's fault if a battery catches fire.

First, a license, or even a registration, won't prevent Ebike fires.
Second, most of the time when a battery catches fire is because of the heat and so during two situations ,one: discharging, two: charging (most of the time is during the charge) and when a battery catches a fire during discharge anyway you are outside so it's not a big hazard. It also come from two factors, one a defective battery and two a shitty charger. The big hazard is when you charge your battery at home often during the night with no survey so the best way to prevent this is to regulate chargers. Like forbid an over 6A charger for the pleb or forbid chinese imported chargers or ask for a license to every charger's builders and so a control to what charger is sell or imported, with only that you've fixed a big part of the problem because even a shitty battery in short circuit with a low charge don't catches a fire or not so strongly than a full or over charged battery. To be precise, the best protective element is the BMS, but it is part of the battery and is therefore very difficult to control what BMS is in every battery. A good smart charger with all the protections included is the best way to avoid most problems.
Ideally you should get a charger that correspond to your battery but it's not gonna happen soon. To give you an exemple i have myself build my own battery for my bike and regarding my calculation i can get a 9A charger but i get a 5A charger to be secure because charging in 2 hours or 4 is not a big deal, plus a low charge is better for the batterie cel. The thing is that you can't ask everybody to be smart so for me the charger regulation is the way to go.

I would dearly LOVE it if E-Bikes and E-scooters were required to be licensed and insured.The people that ride them are absolute menaces.
I'd seen people hit and hurt by them before.
But now this is personal to me, I was recently riding my classic 20" single speed Italian Cinzia city bike, coming home from the ride I was 2 minutes from home when an E-scooter rider was at absolutely flying speed paying no attention to anything but his phone, he panicked/lost control and veered into me headfirst.
His scooter destroyed my bike, just exploded it, but worse was I am seriously injured with bruises and the revving E-scooter wheel took ALL the skin off my shin and calf.Bastard took off running with his e-scooter leaving me there bleeding in the road, I feel that if there were a license at least I could've gotten a plate number to track him down.
As it is I'm just SOL.

That's how it's going to go down though. People will finally get fed up with retards going 30 down the MUP on walmart bikes with chink hub motors and giant batteries held on with zip ties and duct tape and demand the government do something. Regulating motor wattage and limiters and shit like that is totally ineffective without mandatory inspections and speed limits won't be effective without licensing and insurance - most of the deterrence of an automotive speeding ticket is the threat of insurance hikes or suspended licenses, not the actual fine. Then the final stage is everyone abandons ebikes because they were always an objectively terrible form of transportation and the only lure of them in the first place was dodging the regulations governing every other form of motorized transportation.

Some citibikes are now capped at 15mph. I've also noticed delivery bikes going slower. But I've also seen riders on citibikes easily keeping up with me at 18+mph. So it must be a firmware update that takes a while to roll out.
