They looked like such freaks back then. Probably were too. It genuinely rules that they were one of the last rock bands to ever make it truly 'big', and that they did it while riding a sound that was so underground previous to them. I'm a millennial and they weren't really weird as much as stylish. It's worth considering that bands like The Hives, Interpol, and Franz Ferdinand also had similar visual presentations at the time. But yeah, that early 00s garage rock revival/"indie sleaze" thing was maybe the last time mainstream rock music was actually cool, because emo-pop/scene felt like a costume marketed to children.
