his music is very pop music coded to the point some songs have a very vers chorus pop structure. he also has a very public image right from the start with his face being all over everything very different from early 90s techno scene which was lot more about the artist being faceless and unknown.

He's made some very good tracks but out of all the people who came out of the IDM thing he's by far the most overrated. My guess is normalfags are easily impressed by him because of the cheap contrast between mildly abrasive drums and le cutie vulnerable ghibli piano pieces. It gets boring fast, but of course this people never dig deeper and if they do they've most likely allowed themselves to grow emotionally attached to Afx.

The average person has an unbelievably tenuous grasp on how sound design works. They want to recognize "brilliance" in audio engineering as a musical skill but they don't have any fucking clue what's difficult or clever or novel. A typical person understands guitar or piano or voice well enough to hear a performance and be able to clock "wow, that person must have some serious chops" but the average person "critiquing" electronic music just doesn't have a fucking clue.AFX has been cargo culted to hell and back. You say you like him because you understand that he is meant to have some serious talent, some serious prowess behind the knobs of a synthesizer, and how the fuck would you know one way or the other? Therefore he must be good, pleb. Please don't ask me to explain why though.
